NPCA's 2010/11 projects

The emphasis of the project programme is on:

  • improving industry standards for controlling and monitoring vertebrate pests;
  • developing national guidelines and associated tools to assist practitioners meet regulatory standards;
  • revising and updating pest control publications, aimed at both industry practitioners and the general public.

2010/11 Project Programme

1. Legislation User Guide

Review and update of the 2006 version (see publications, code B1). Revisions will cover changes in legislation and regulations since the 2006 version was published. New flow charts to better guide readers will also be added and the document will be edited and formatted for improved ease of use. A system for ongoing updating will also be initiated.

2. Toxins Brochures - Stage 2

Brochures on the use of Pindone and Brodifacoum will be prepared, in the format and style of the Cholecalciferol and Cyanide brochures.

3. 1080 Best Practice Guidelines

Work started in 2009 on the preparation of a set of nationally agreed minimum best practice standards to guide the use of 1080 in aerial pest control operations. Completion is targeted for September 2010.

4. Standard Operating Procedures for Regional Council 1080 Aerial Use

Detailed standard operating procedures (SOPs) for regional council 1080 operations will be prepared as part of the above project. These will sit alongside the Department of Conservation and Animal Health Board SOPs.

5. Pest Rabbits Best Practice Update

A review and update of the 2006 version (see publications, code A5).

6. Responsible Use of Bait Stations - Guidelines

A new guideline is to be produced.

7. Vertebrate Toxic Agents - Safe Use and Handling (Publication Code B2)

Review and update of the existing 2006 version of this best practice publication (see publications, code B2) has been deferred to 2011.

A review is to take place in 2010 to see if other projects can be funded.
